How Self-Investment Changed My Career

I've invested in lights. I've invested in cameras, lenses. But the greatest investment. Well, that was myself. As soon as I started looking at myself as the greatest asset for my business, I realized that I have to invest in myself. Whether that's taking risks, being able to invest in your own skillset, and being able to expand your horizons as an artist.

I found myself at a creative crossroads. Do I continue my life with complacency? Or do I take a risk, and invest in myself to further my growth as a filmmaker. That’s a scary thought? What if you fail? What if you are not good enough? I have dealt with imposter syndrome my entire life. It does not matter how many accolades or accomplishments I experienced in my career, I always have a nagging thought: Am I good enough?

When I needed to make a decision about which direction I was going to take my career, and ultimately my life, it was not easy. I don’t have to worry just about me, but my family. Having children and parents you take care of puts in perspective the work you do. You can no longer be selfish with your decisions, as if you fail… you are letting those around you down as well.

The truth can be said about complacency. If you are not pushing yourself, what kind of example are you setting for others. I have prided myself on being a mentor to colleagues and artist that are just starting their careers. I never want to gate-keep information, because in show business, collaboration is pinnacle to success. How can I be a mentor to others, if I don’t practice what I preach?

So I knew I had to make the decision- I had to take a risk, and invest in myself. It was not easy, and I have made a lot of mistakes along the way, but ultimately I am where I need to be. On a path as a filmmaker, who lives or dies by my own decisions.

When you're getting ready to swipe your credit card on the next piece of gear. Think about the investment that you need to make in yourself.
